Reimagining the Belfast Showband

  • Harland & Wolff Staff Club 8-10 Dundela Avenue Belfast, Northern Ireland, BT4 3BQ United Kingdom (map)

What happens when Belfast’s showband legacy meets a new generation of musicians?

The Strand ran as a Variety Theatre from 1984–1987 and has hosted many showbands over its 90-year history. For this event, we bring together long-standing musician George Jones of Clubsound with emerging Belfast musicians from Shamrock Showband, with special guests including Trevor Kelly.

Together, they will explore the history and legacy of the showbands, their influence on Belfast’s music scene and the ways that tradition continues to inspire contemporary musicians.

George will share memories and stories from the showband era – from the music and musicians to the venues, audiences and culture surrounding the scene. Shamrock Showband will take inspiration from George’s repertoire, reimagining and reinterpreting selected songs from a contemporary perspective before coming together for a special live performance.

Period-inspired archive film and photographs will bring the era to life.

Taking place at the historic Harland & Wolff Staff Club, this evening of conversation, archive material and live music will celebrate the golden era of the showbands while looking to the future.

This pilot event marks the beginning of a longer-term Strand project exploring how Belfast’s musical heritage can be shared between generations and brought back to life.
